Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Ceist:

161 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding the provision of extra facilities at Rathmore national school, Naas, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28421/01]

My Department has received an application for grant-aid towards the cost of a building project at Rathmore national school, Naas, County Kildare.

The Deputy will appreciate that there has been a massive and unprecedented increase in the funds allocated by this Government to the building programme at all levels. The allocation in the current year is £370.5 million, 470.4 million. This is almost four times the allocation made by the previous Government in 1997. This level of funding has enabled my Department to undertake a record number of building projects, and it is my intention to continue this rate of progress in overcoming the deficit arising from many past years and in meeting the needs of the present day.

Decisions relating to the rate of progress to construction of individual projects, including Rathmore national school, will be taken as in previous years in the light of the allocations to be made for school building purposes at the conclusion of the forthcoming budgetary process.

The stage 6 – tender action and report – in respect of the proposed extra facilities at Scoil Dara, Kilcock, County Kildare has been examined within the Department.

My Department's post primary building unit has indicated to the school authorities that consideration is being given to formally approving the tender recommended for acceptance by their design team. This approval, however, is subject to confirmation that the contractor can meet the standard contractual requirements, that is, evidence of tax clearance, membership of CIF, and so on. Confirmation of these items is currently awaited before the matter can be progressed.

168 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress regarding plans for the provision of primary and second level school facilities at Kill, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28428/01]

At primary level, the position is that, in Kill, the need for a 16 classroom school has been identified. However, the current school site does not have the capacity to cater for 16 classrooms and appropriate ancillary accommodation. Accordingly, the Office of Public Works has been asked by my Department to locate a suitable site in Kill for a new school. Pending the delivery of permanent accommodation, temporary accommodation will be provided as necessary to cope with immediate needs.

At post-primary level, Kill forms part of the Naas catchment area. Following an evaluation of post-primary school requirements in the area, building projects were approved for all three schools in the centre. The current status of these building projects is that the extension and refurbishment programme at St. Mary's College has been completed, while the building programme for Meánscoil Iognáid Rís is in architectural planning. The need to extend and refurbish St. Patrick's post-primary school has been agreed in principle with the school's management authority, County Kildare Vocational Education Committee. Further information is awaited from the VEC before this project can be progressed.

A review of the accommodation requirements in St. Mary's College was requested by the school authorities and is currently being examined in my Department's planning section. The school will be advised of the outcome of this review in due course. It is envisaged that, when these projects are completed, there will be sufficient accommodation to meet future needs in Kill, at primary level and at post-primary level in the Naas catchment area.

169 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science if permanent facilities will be provided at Coláiste Cois Life, County Dublin; when work is likely to start on the project; if this work is likely to be undertaken under a public private partnership; if his attention has been drawn to the need to proceed with the project as a matter of urgency; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28429/01]

I wish to inform the deputy that the design team is currently working on a stage three submission – developed sketch scheme – for the provision of a new school for Coláiste Cois Life. It is not intended to undertake this project as a public private partnership.
