Vol. 544 No. 2

Written Answers. - Autism Services.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

24 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the widespread concern regarding the lack of services for autistic children in County Kerry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28181/01]

At present, there are two special classes for children with autism in County Kerry. Each of these classes is capable of catering for up to six pupils and each has the support of a teacher and two special needs assistants. A number of additional children with autism are attending ordinary schools in the county where they are supported by the resource teacher and special needs assistant services. My Department's inspectorate is currently pursuing the establishment of a further class for children with autism in the county.

I am anxious that all children with special needs in County Kerry, including children with autism, should receive an appropriate response to their needs at the earliest possible date. If the Deputy has a particular case in mind he may wish to provide me with details so that I can have the matter investigated.
