Vol. 544 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

37 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 215 of 2 May 2001 he will state if the report was delivered to him on schedule; and if the contents will be made public and debated. [28242/01]

In my earlier response to the Deputy I indicated that the task force had completed its detailed deliberations and was engaged in finalising the drafting of its report. The report of the task force on dyslexia has been received in my Department in recent days. The report deals with a wide range of complex issues and will now require careful consideration in my Department. In the course of its work, the task force received and considered 396 written submissions and 896 oral submissions from interested parties. It also received presentations from experts in the field of dyslexia from the US and Northern Ireland.

Given the complexity of the issues involved, I am satisfied the task force completed its work as speedily as possible. I take this opportunity to express my thanks to the chairperson and members of the task force for the commitment they have shown in addressing this very complex area. The work carried out by the task force will be of great value to the future development of services for children with dyslexia.

It is my intention that the report will be made publicly available as soon as possible. With this in mind, arrangements are being made to have copies of the report printed so that they can be made available to interested parties. Arrangements will also be made to place the report on the Department's website.
