Vol. 544 No. 4

Written Answers. - Coastal Protection.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

74 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he has received an application from Louth County Council requesting funding for the prevention of coastal erosion; his plans in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28841/01]

Expenditure on coastal protection over the period of the national development plan will be £41 million, 52 million. The programme is targeting serious and urgent cases of coastal erosion on a value for money basis through prioritised multi-annual programmes in consultation with local authorities. The coastal protection programme is being underpinned by a new research and development programme which will inform the national coast protection strategy up to 2015.

Funding of £118,062, 149,908, was allocated this year to Louth County Council towards phase 2 protection works at Annagassan costing a total of £157,416, 199,877. A further £30,000, 38,092, was recently allocated to Louth County Council to carry out urgent coastal protection works at Salterstown, County Louth.

My Department has invited applications from the local authorities for coastal protection priorities under the 2002 coast protection programme. Louth County Council has submitted a proposal for funding for coastal protection at Whitestown, Ballagan, at an estimated cost of £50,800, 64,502. The proposal is being assessed in the context of available funding and overall priorities for the 2002 programme.
