Vol. 544 No. 5

Written Answers. - Diplomatic Representation.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

80 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the number of EU applicant countries in which he is considering establishing residential embassies; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29338/01]

There are 12 EU applicant countries which are under consideration for membership. Ireland has had residential embassies in three of the applicant countries – Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland – for a number of years, and recently opened embassies in four others, Cyprus, Estonia, Slovakia and Slovenia. I envisage the opening of embassies in the remaining EU applicant countries – Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Bulgaria and Romania – on a phased basis over the coming years.

Question No. 81 answered with Question No. 7.
