There are 12 EU applicant countries which are under consideration for membership. Ireland has had residential embassies in three of the applicant countries – Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland – for a number of years, and recently opened embassies in four others, Cyprus, Estonia, Slovakia and Slovenia. I envisage the opening of embassies in the remaining EU applicant countries – Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Bulgaria and Romania – on a phased basis over the coming years.
