265 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his plans to address the concerns of local authority staff regarding the change of their employment status from officers to employees; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [31573/01]
Better Local Government – A Programme for Change (1996) stated that the then distinction of local authority employment streams into "officers" and "servants" was an anachronism which would be addressed in consultation with staff interests.
Proposals arising from this process have now been legislated for by the Oireachtas in the Local Government Act, 2001, and will be commenced shortly.
