Vol. 546 No. 3

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Ulick Burke

Ceist:

279 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will provide additional funding to Galway County Council for the provision of a sewerage treatment plant at Eyrecourt, County Galway; and if he will allow this situation to continue without his Department interceding in the matter. [31895/01]

A preliminary report for the Eyrecourt sewerage scheme was submitted to my Department in 1995 but has not been approved. The scheme was included in the list of water and sewerage schemes submitted by Galway County Council in response to my Department's request to local authorities to undertake fresh assessments of the needs for capital works in their areas and to prioritise their proposals on the basis of the assessments. The priority lists were taken into account in the framing of the Water Services Investment Programme 2000-2002, announced in July 2000. Because of the level of competing demand, the limited funding available, and the need to prioritise individual proposals on a national basis, it has not been possible to include the scheme in the programme.
