Vol. 546 No. 3

Written Answers. - Fishing Rights.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

90 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources his policy on share certificates; if there is promised legislation on the licensing of fishing rights; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [31761/01]

Policy in relation to share certificates of fisheries co-operative societies is provided for in the Fisheries (Amendment) Act, 1991, and in the rules of the societies made under the Act. The legislation makes provision for the grant of share certificates by the societies, membership, voting rights and the entitlement to fish for trout or coarse fish. At present I have no proposals to change these arrangements.

The Fisheries Acts provide for the acquisition of a fishery by a fisheries board with my authorisation and where I am satisfied that the acquisition is for the purpose of enabling an inland fisheries development programme or is for the purposes of managing, protecting or developing the fishery in accordance with such a programme. I have no proposals to introduce new legislation in relation to the licensing of fishing rights.
