Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Foreign Conflicts.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

164 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the Government's views on the situation in Sri Lanka; and if the Government can contribute to the peace process there. [1252/02]

There have been a number of improvements in the situation in Sri Lanka recently. The Sri Lankan Government embargo against the Tamil areas has been lifted and the Tamil Tigers de-proscribed. The Tamil Tigers declared a cessation of hostilities just before Christmas. The Sri Lankan Government has responded positively to this cessation. There are also positive signs from both sides with regard to the release of prisoners.

The Government has been monitoring the situation closely with our EU partners. We fully support the mediation efforts of the Norwegian Government and will consider any request to assist the peace process.
