Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Consular Assistance.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

168 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if assistance will be given to a person (details supplied) in the United States of America to obtain legal representation. [1398/02]

Ceist:

176 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will examine a case (details supplied) to see if this person can be assisted by the consular service in Boston; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1626/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 168 and 176 together.

The Consulate General in Boston has met with the person in question on a number of occasions over the last year and has been assisting him to obtain legal representation. These efforts have been taking place against the background where the individual concerned has no longer an entitlement to State-appointed representation and where it is necessary, therefore, to identify a lawyer who is willing to take on the case on a pro bono basis.

In recent weeks, following efforts from the Consulate General, a lawyer has agreed to assist, on an informal basis, with the next step in the legal process. The Consulate General will remain in contact with the person in question and will continue to provide all possible consular assistance for him.

Question No. 169 answered with Question No. 163.
