Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Post Office Network.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

191 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the number of post offices in the country which are not wheelchair accessible. [1096/02]

An Post has informed me that 644 post offices out of a total network of 1798 are not wheelchair accessible. Over 90% of the company staffed post offices and approximately 75% of all sub-post offices are currently wheelchair accessible. However, some buildings cannot be altered without substantial reconstruction and in some cases, where premises are subject to a preservation order, no alterations are permitted. An Post has indicated that it is its policy to have the majority of post offices fully accessible or to make special provision for the needs of wheelchair customers who are unable to gain access to the main post office counters.
