Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Coal and Petcoke Usage.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

229 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the estimated use of coal and petcoke in rural Ireland; the estimated tonnage of coal and petcoke used in rural Ireland on an annual basis; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2832/02]

Estimated consumption of coal in 2000 – the last year for which figures are available – was 2.7 million tonnes of which 2.2 million tonnes was used for electricity generation. About 430,000 tonnes was used in the residential sector and this included about 80,000 tonnes of anthracite and manufactured ovoids.

Petcoke consumption in 2000 was estimated at 282,000 tonnes of which nearly 80% was in the industrial sector. I have no information on the breakdown between rural and urban consumption.
