The premises will be completed and ready for occupation in January 2003. The following State sector groups and organisations will be accommodated in the premises: the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs, the Family Mediation Service, FÁS, the Northern Area Health Board and Dublin City Council. In the community sector, the centre will be occupied by Northside Partnership, Monetary Advice and Budgeting, the Local Employment Service, the Coolock Community Law Centre, NEAR FM and the Northside Citizens Information Centre. There will also be shared crèche, café and conference facilities.
The Northside Citizens Information Centre, a community information service funded by the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs, approached local management in the Department in 1998 with a proposal to develop a civic centre in Coolock which would enable the Department to relocate its service from its city centre location in Gardiner Street to Coolock. The Department has been seeking a suitable site for a local office in the Dublin 5-17 area since 1993. In 1999 a site owned by Dublin City Council became available at Bunratty Road, Coolock. The council indicated that it would be prepared to sell the site to the State, provided any development would include accommodation for the various voluntary groups in the area. Following community consultations, the Northside Citizens Information Centre compiled a list of the requirements of the local community and voluntary groups to be accommodated in the civic centre. The brief for the building was developed by a management committee comprised of all State and community sector occupants.
