597 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health and Children if a psychiatric nurse can commence general nursing studies, post registration here; the number of places there are for such nurses; and his plans to provide such places to prevent nurses from having to travel to England for this training. At present it is not possible for a psychiatric nurse to undertake a post-registration programme of study leading to registration as a general nurse. However, the provision of such programmes will be considered in the context of the development of the new four-year undergraduate pre-registration nursing degree programme that is being introduced on a nationwide basis at the start of the next academic year, 2002-03.
