Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

740 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if further progress has been made regarding the policy to provide sewerage facilities in rural towns and villages; if the application by Westmeath County Council, to have Castletown-Geoghegan accepted as a pilot site for a proposed initiative in County Westmeath has been approved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1560/02]

I recently approved a recommendation of the national rural water monitoring committee for a pilot programme to test a range of small-scale wastewater collection and treatment systems at some 12 locations around the country, including Castletown-Geoghegan, County Westmeath.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

741 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will approve stage two of the sewerage extension at Ballyhaunis, County Mayo. [1585/02]

The Ballyhaunis sewerage scheme was substantially completed in 1999 and my Department has no current proposals from Mayo County Council for major further works associated with the scheme.

I have, however, recently approved the council's tender recommendation for the civil works element of the Ballyhaunis water supply augmentation scheme; these works additionally include an extension of the sewerage collection system within the environs of the town.
