Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Systems.

Jack Wall

Ceist:

748 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the position regarding the Castledermot sewerage plant and collection systems; the start date for the projects; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1638/02]

I approved Kildare County Council's tender recommendation for the sewage treatment works in July 2001, and I understand that construction of this element of the scheme is in progress.

Earlier this month, I approved the contract documents for an archaeological survey of the route of the sewer network. Further advancement of this element of the scheme must await the results of the survey.

Ceist:

749 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the position regarding the new sewerage system for Deninter and Ticknevin, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1639/02]

The provision of a new waste water treatment plant and collection system at Derrinturn was included as a 2005 objective in the list of schemes submitted by Kildare County Council in response to my Department's request to local authorities to undertake fresh assessments of the needs for capital works in their areas and to prioritise their proposals on the basis of the assessments. The list did not include proposals for a sewerage scheme for Ticknevin.

The priority lists were taken into account in the framing of the water services investment programme 2000-2002, announced in July 2000. Given the timing indicated for the Derrinturn scheme by the council, and the absence of any prioritised proposal for Ticknevin, it has not been possible to include the schemes in the programme. Certain improvements to the existing sewerage system in Derrinturn were completed in May 2001 under the serviced land initiative.
