Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Town Councils.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

760 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will grant town council status for the towns of Celbridge and Maynooth in County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1810/02]

The relevant statutory provisions for the establishment of a town council are now set out in Part 17 of the Local Government Act, 2001. A phased programme to bring the various provisions of the Act into operation by way of a series of orders and regulations is well under way and it is planned to commence that part later this year. Any proposal for the establishment of a town council, which under the Act must be initiated at local level, will fall to be considered within this new statutory framework.
