Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Grant Payments.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

884 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the reason a person (details supplied) in County Mayo did not receive payment under the ewe cull scheme in 2002; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1994/02]

Dúchas, the heritage service of my Department, pays compensation to farmers, who destocked their sheep flocks by 30% in 1998, for losses suffered as a result of this destocking. As a result of a court ruling in 2000, to which my Department was not a party, the person referred to is not permitted to keep any sheep. Therefore, he did not suffer any losses in 2001 as a result of the 1998 de-stocking and is not entitled to a payment from my Department.

Ceist:

885 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if grant aid was approved for a bakery in Belmullet, County Mayo; the amount of the grant; the basis on which it was granted; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1995/02]

I understand that Údarás na Gaeltachta has since 1978 approved a series of assist ance packages for the development of a bakery in Belmullet, County Mayo. The amount of the assistance approved over the years is a total of 279,551. The basis on which this assistance was granted is that there is no other bakery in the Erris area or within 40 miles of Belmullet. It is a manufacturing business which provides an essential service to the people of Erris as well as providing much needed employment in the area.
