Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

933 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of operational fixed location speed cameras; the locations of these cameras; and the length of time each has been in position and operational. [1394/02]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that in April 2000, the Garda Síochána and the National Roads Authority launched a pilot project on fixed speed cameras. This project involves the use of four fixed speed cameras, operating between 20 camera sites in the Louth-Meath and Dublin metropolitan regions.

Under the national strategy on road safety, 1998-2002, a sub-group of the interagency high level group on road safety, consisting of representatives of my Department, the Department of Environment and Local Government, the Garda national traffic bureau and the National Roads Authority, is currently examining the possible future use of speed camera technology.
