Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Closed Circuit Television Systems.

Phil Hogan

Ceist:

993 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the amount allocated for the provision of closed circuit television cameras in urban areas for 2001; the amount of money spent in each centre which was implemented in 2001; the centres which will be approved in 2002; if Kilkenny city will be under those urban centres approved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2075/02]

The Government approved expenditure of £12 million, 15.24 million, over three years on CCTV. A provision of £4.185 million, 5.311 million, was included in the Estimates published for 2001 for CCTV projects. The Deputy may recall that I announced in November 2000 that ten areas would be provided with CCTV systems by the end of 2002 and further areas in 2003. The ten areas by alphabetical order are: Athlone, Bray, Clondalkin, Dundalk, Dun Laoghaire, Finglas, Galway, Limerick, Tallaght and Waterford.

No direct expenditure on installing Garda CCTV systems in these centres has yet been incurred. My aim remains to have Garda CCTV systems installed in these centres by the end of 2002. The current position is that tenders have been received for Limerick, Galway, Bray, Finglas, Dun Laoghaire and Dundalk and contracts should be awarded soon. It is expected that tenders will be invited via the EU Journal within the next three months for Waterford, Athlone, Tallaght and Clondalkin.

I will be announcing approvals for other areas in due course. A Garda CCTV proposal for Kilkenny has been received and is under consideration.
