Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Court Procedures.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

1006 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his proposals to strengthen the procedures in regard to the serving of a court summons; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2402/02]

I understand that the Deputy's question relates to the service of criminal summonses by the Garda Síochána. Such summonses are served in accordance with Order 10, District Court Rules 1997 (S.I. 93/1997).

In relation to the issue raised by the Deputy, I am informed by the Garda authorities that it is a matter for the Garda serving the summons to ascertain if the person other than the accused is an "appropriate adult" on which to serve a summons.

I have, at this time, no proposals to amend the current procedures in relation to these matters.
