Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

1009 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform further to Parliamentary Question No. 189 of 17 May 2001, the action which has been taken to pursue the persons and to investigate their activities. [2447/02]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that as a result of Garda inquiries into this matter, a person was charged with a breach of section 2 of the Larceny Act, 1916, as amended.

This person subsequently failed to appear in court and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest. He was re-arrested and appeared before Tallaght court and was released on bail to appear before District Court number 46, Chancery Street. I understand that he also failed to appear on this occasion and that another warrant was issued for his arrest. To date, the warrant has not been executed, but every effort is being made to establish the whereabouts of the suspect.
I have also been informed that the injured parties were kept aware of ongoing developments by the investigating Garda.

Ceist:

1010 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will seek a report from the Garda Commissioner regarding the number of break-ins in an area (details supplied) in Dublin 12; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2448/02]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that during the year 2001 two burglaries occurred within the complex referred to in the Deputy's question, both occurring during the month of November 2001. These burglaries are the subject of ongoing Garda investigations.

I am also informed that for the area as a whole a total of 88 burglaries occurred during 2001 with a total of 43 detected. Investigations are ongoing in respect of these not yet detected, and investigating gardaí are confident that those responsible will be made amenable.

I am further informed that the complex referred to and the adjoining areas are frequently patrolled by uniformed gardaí, the detective unit, the divisional crime task force, the drug unit, the special resource unit and the community policing unit. Known offenders are constantly being targeted and this will continue. The Garda are very conscious of the concerns of the residents in the area affected and they will not be found wanting in alleviating their concerns.
