Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Censorship Board.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

1017 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his views on the concerns of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 5 regarding the availability of pornography in family shops; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2620/02]

As the Deputy will be aware, under the terms of the Censorship of Publications Acts, 1929, 1946 and 1967 the Censorship of Publications Board is the body with responsibility for the censorship of pornographic publications in this jurisdiction. Under the terms of the Censorship of Publications Acts, the board is independent in the performance of its functions and it is open to any member of the public who wishes to do so to make a complaint to the board's offices at 13 Lower Hatch Street, Dublin 2.

I can inform the Deputy that a review which I initiated in my Department to address the legal and structural arrangements which apply to censorship, in consideration of the major changes which have occurred in society and in technology since the legislation in this area was enacted, is at an advanced stage with a discussion document in the final stages of preparation.
