Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Swimming Pool Projects.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

1054 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the situation in relation to the Drogheda swimming pool; when and the way in which he will replace the pool; when it will be demolished; his plans to rebuild the pool; the size it will be; the general information he has in relation to the pool; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1932/02]

Under the local authority swimming pool programme, which is administered by my Department, there are four stages in a swimming pool project. These, in order of progress, are: preliminary report; contract document; tender; and construction. My Department's technical advisers, the Office of Public Works – Office of Public Works – evaluates each stage and local authorities cannot proceed to the next stage of a project unless prior approval issues from my Department. Grant aid is allocated only when tenders have been received for the project and will be capped at the time of allocation.

In relation to Drogheda swimming pool, I approved the preliminary report submitted by Drogheda City Council in relation to the proposed refurbishment of the pool in April 2000. However, following assessment of the pool by consultants appointed by the city council, my Department was informed that the city council would submit a revised preliminary report for a new replacement pool on the existing site, rather than proceed with its original refurbishment proposal. Drogheda City Council submitted a revised preliminary report for the replacement pool to my Department and it was sent to the Office of Public Works for assessment in December 2001. Further consideration will be given to the report by my Department following this assessment.

The work proposed by Drogheda City Council will include a main pool sized at 25 metres by 10.5 metres with five lanes, a teaching pool to incorporate a toddler pool, a spa pool, sauna, steam room, spectator area, studio and crèche.
