In January 2000, the Government announced its intention to provide a campus and stadium at a site in Abbotstown. Campus and Stadium Ireland Development Ltd, CSID, estimated that the cost of this project would be 698 million, £550 million, of which some 444 million, £350 million would be required to be provided by the Exchequer. Since then the High-Point Rendel overview, completed at the Government's request, examined the Exchequer allocation which would be necessary to complete the project. I do not intend making any statement on this report or its contents until the Government has considered this report and its implications for current plans for the Campus and Stadium Ireland project. Meanwhile there are a number of other ground developments throughout the country being assisted under the sports capital programme and grants awarded to GAA county grounds, Eircom league soccer and AIB league rugby grounds in 2001 are shown in the following tabular statement.
Grants totalling 25.39 million were also paid to the Gaelic Athletic Association in respect of the development of Croke Park in the years 1998, 1999 and 2000. In addition, in 2001 an allocation of a further 19.05 million was made to the Gaelic Athletic Association to ensure that Croke Park will be ready to host the opening and closing ceremonies for the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2003.
