Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Residential Institutions Redress.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

1088 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education and Science if, in the context of the Government's proposals to compensate victims of abuse in State institutions, he has given consideration to the revocation of the criminal status of the residents in these institutions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1977/02]

The issue of the criminal status of former residents of reformatory and industrial schools was discussed in some detail at the recent Committee Stage debate on the Residential Institutions Redress Bill. Many Deputies expressed concern that children who were committed to the institutions for reasons which had nothing to do with committing offences appear to have a criminal record. If that is the case then it is unfair to the people concerned. I am having this matter investigated and, if necessary, I will bring forward appropriate amendments on Report Stage of the debate on the Bill.
