Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Academy for Performing Arts.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

1093 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Question Nos. 423 and 424 of 11 December 2001, he will ensure the development of a third-level institute for the education and training of performing artists; if a regional spread will be achieved in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1082/02]

I will ensure the development of the Academy for the Performing Arts, in keeping with the Government decision. As the Deputy is aware the next steps in the development of the academy will be the appointment of a governing authority and a president. The position on the achievement of a regional spread for the academy is that the academy will be set up on a nodal basis, incorporating: a headquarters and significant facilities on a site to be provided on the DCU campus; a Limerick campus developing the existing Irish World Music Centre at UL; an under-graduate professional dance facility based at the Firkin Crane Dance Development Agency in Cork. Once established, it is envisaged that the academy will establish links with other providers of performing arts education and training throughout the island.
