Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Gerry Reynolds

Ceist:

1167 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has met with the board of management of St. Michael's and St. Joseph's primary schools, Mohill, County Leitrim within the past month; and if his Department will provide the necessary capital grants in 2002 to allow the building of a new primary school in Mohill. [1521/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is 153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving the accommodation situation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Due to the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

The commencement of architectural planning for new school building projects will be contingent on the level of funding available for primary buildings in 2003 and the application from St. Michael's and St. Joseph's Primary Schools, Mohill, will be reviewed at that stage.
