Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Gerry Reynolds

Ceist:

1217 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason school transport is not provided for a person (details supplied) in County Leitrim; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1736/02]

The position generally is that in order to be eligible for free transport, children must live at least two miles from the nearest appropriate school and be attending that school.

My Department is prepared to allow the pupil concerned avail of concessionary fare-paying transport provided no extra State cost is involved by way of extending or altering the bus route and provided the written agreement of the board of management of the nearest school to the provision of transport is secured. An official form for this purpose issued to the family.

The medical evidence was forwarded to the medical adviser who determined that the pupil's condition would not prevent her from making her way to the pick-up point, which is 0.5 miles from her home.
