Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Regional Fisheries Boards.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

136 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if his attention has been drawn to the South-Western Regional Fisheries Board's plans to take control of fisheries presently in possession of the farming community and under lease to angling clubs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1358/02]

Under the Fisheries Acts the regional fisheries boards have the statutory function of ensuring that any fishery in their pos session or which is placed under their care and management by the Central Fisheries Board is managed, conserved, protected and developed in accordance with development plans for inland fisheries. The boards are also statutorily obliged to have regard to the particular role and contribution of angling clubs and associations in the sustainable management and development to the public benefit of State, public and other inland fisheries in their fisheries regime. I am asking the South-Western Regional Fisheries Board to contact the Deputy directly in this matter with a view to providing him with information in relation to the specific fisheries in question.
