Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

John Bruton

Ceist:

1388 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has received correspondence from a person (details supplied) regarding the building of a new national school at Ratoath, County Meath; and his views on the concerns raised in the letter regarding the fact that Ratoath national school is to be built as a public private partnership. [2730/02]

My Department has recently received correspondence from the person referred to by the Deputy regarding the building of a primary school in Ratoath. My Department is currently at the early stages of considering further projects under the public private partnership process, PPP, following the commencement of construction of the initial pilot phase of the post-primary PPP project. The initial project is testing the PPP process in respect of post-primary school provision. As the Deputy will be aware, PPP projects encompass the design, build, financing and operation of capital facilities. I am sure the Deputy will agree that it is prudent to keep all options open and accordingly my Department requested the board of management to postpone, for the time being, the process of appointing of a design team.
