Ceist:

1393 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science the total number of senior cycle students studying for the leaving certificate in 2002 and 2003 in second level schools; the numbers in transition level classes; and the numbers in junior certificate classes at 30 September 2001 or a more recent date. The information requested by the Deputy is set out as follows.

Total number of students studying in the senior cycle

in 2002:

Leaving certificate established programme	34,293
Leaving certificate vocational programme	14,456
Leaving certificate applied programme	3,172
Repeat leaving certificate students	3,736

Total number of students studying in the senior cycle

in 2003:

Leaving certificate established programme	36,865
Leaving certificate vocational programme	17,361
Leaving certificate applied programme	4,327
Repeat leaving certificate students	n/a

Number of students enrolled at 30 September 2001

by programme

Junior certificate	176,502
Transition year	22,793

I would point out to the Deputy that all figures are provisional. Some schools have not yet returned data to the Department for the 2001-02 school year. Data in respect of the outstanding schools has been entered on a provisional basis using last year's enrolments for each school by programme studied.
