Vol. 547 No. 3

Written Answers. - Bus and Rail Services.

John Bruton

Ceist:

166 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the cost per passenger mile of travel by Bus Éireann and by Iarnrod Éireann on the basis of existing traffic preference, levels of subsidy and institutional arrangements. [3461/02]

I am informed by Bus Éireann that in 2000, the latest year for which figures are available, the company's vehicles travelled 73,560,000 kilometres on provincial city services and other scheduled services. The company's operating costs were €170,056,000; therefore, the total cost per kilometre for the year 2000 was €2.31 or €3.72 per mile.

In respect of Iarnród Éireann, mainline and suburban rail divisions, the operating costs were €192 million and passenger miles were 863 million. The operating cost per passenger mile is €0.22.
