Vol. 547 No. 3

Written Answers. - Driving Tests.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

270 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the reason a CD-ROM which instructs drivers for the driver theory test, which is distributed on behalf of the Department, is not compatible with a brand of PC (details supplied). [3266/02]

The driver theory testing service is operated as a public private partnership project. The contract for the service requires, and grants an exclusive licence to, the contractors involved to publish and distribute a question bank in book and CD-ROM formats.

The contract does not provide in detail for the technical specifications of the CD-ROM. My Department understands, however, from the contractor that the platform on which the published CD-ROM is based is directly compatible with the great majority of software operating systems available and should be compatible with all other operating systems through use of appropriate emulation software. In light of this position, further modification of the CD-ROM in question is not envisaged.
