Vol. 547 No. 3

Written Answers. - Courts Service.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

335 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his proposals to introduce legislation whereby court service orders, regarding community service, will provide for convicted offenders being assigned to carry out a wider range of work to benefit communities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3536/02]

The Criminal Justice (Community Service) Act 1983, does not specify the type of work that may be performed under a community service order other than that it must be unpaid work. The range of work that may be carried out is not otherwise limited by the Act. The court only has to satisfy itself that the offender is a suitable person to carry out work under such an order and that the offender has consented to do so.
