Vol. 547 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Dan Neville

Ceist:

361 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Education and Science if funding will be made available in 2002 for significant upgrading and major refurbishment of a school (details supplied) in County Limerick. [3135/02]

The school referred to by the Deputy is one of three post primary schools serving the needs of the area in question, two of which are voluntary secondary schools and a vocational school under the aegis of the vocational education committee.

An application for grant aid to upgrade and refurbish facilities at the school in question is being examined in the planning section of my Department. As part of the process, all relevant factors, including enrolment and demographic trends in the area, will be taken into consideration. A decision on the matter will be notified to the school authorities as soon as possible.
In the meantime, the school authorities have applied for funding to carry out remedial works that are deemed essential on health and safety grounds. The appointment of a consultant to identify any necessary remedial works has been approved and an estimate of costs for the proposed works is awaited.
