Vol. 547 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Michael D. Higgins

Ceist:

369 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Education and Science when an application by Renvyle School, County Galway for an additional room will be sanctioned; when work will commence; if the room for a resource teacher and a special needs assistant should have to wait for provision until summer 2003; if approval will be given for the project; and if provision will be expedited. [3160/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates the Government's commitment to improving the accommodation situation in primary schools.

Due to the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since the Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major building projects in construction and in architectural planning. This has given rise to a record level of financial commitments. The funding available in 2002 will enable the completion of those projects that are currently on site and will allow a limited number of high priority projects to proceed to construction.

A proposed building project at Renvyle, County Galway, will proceed to architectural planning and to the preparation of tender documents as soon as possible under the expanded building programme.

Ceist:

370 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Education and Science the position in relation to the proposed extension to St. Colman's national school, Corofin, County Galway; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3161/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates the Government's commitment to improving the accommodation situation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Due to the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since the Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

A building project at St. Colman's national school is currently in architectural planning as part of the Government's programme. The project will continue to the preparation of tender documents and the invitation of tenders, as soon as possible, under the expanded building programme.
