Legislative proposals to amend the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 1989, are being finalised in the Department. Pertinent issues of offences and penalties are being addressed in this context, with a view to strengthening those provisions.
All such proposals will be subject to the normal process of legal drafting, approval by Government and passage through the Legislature. Therefore, it is not possible at this stage to be precise about the exact timing of the introduction of the legislation. A strengthened and updated Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 1989, will be of benefit to all sectors of employment, including the construction sector.
