Vol. 548 No. 1

Written Answers. - Nuclear Safety.

John Gormley

Ceist:

11 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the agreement which was reached on the issue of nuclear safety at the Laeken EU summit; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3830/02]

The Taoiseach indicated to Prime Minister Verhofstadt in Dublin, during his tour of capitals prior to the European Council at Laeken, that he supported and would welcome a reference in the conclusions of the Council to the importance of nuclear safety. In the event the European Council, in its conclusions, stated that it undertakes to maintain a high level of nuclear safety in the Union. It stressed the need to monitor the security and safety of nuclear power stations and called for regular reports from member states' atomic energy experts, who will maintain close contact with the Commission. The Government welcomes these conclusions and will continue to promote through all appropriate channels its long-standing position regarding nuclear safety.
