Vol. 548 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Transport.

John Bruton

Ceist:

460 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if the school transport section of his Department has completed its review of the proposed extension of the school bus services from the Monknewtown school area to Slane school; and if he will make a statement on the matter following his response to a parliamentary question on 11 December 2001. [4622/02]

Two of the families in question reside closer to another school and, accordingly, their children are not basically eligible for school transport. The third family is eligible for transport to the school and resides one mile from the route of service. As a rule, primary school transport routes are planned so that, as far as possible, no eligible child will have more than 1.5 miles to travel to a pick-up point. Pupils living off the main route of service are generally expected to make their own way or be brought to convenient pick-up points along the main route. Accordingly, the current arrangement is the most that can be offered by my Department.
