John McGuinness

Ceist:

175 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of applications he has received from Kilkenny County Council for new fire stations and their locations; the stage at which each application is; when a decision will be taken on each one; if other applications for funding to develop the fire services are with his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4848/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 170, 171 and 175 together.

Three proposals from Kilkenny County Council for the provision of new fire stations at Freshford, Callan and Castlecomer are under consideration in my Department. The Freshford and Callan proposals are at contract document stage and Castlecomer is at approval-in-principle stage. Many applications for funding for the provision of fire stations, fire appliances, the computer aided mobilisation project and emergency or rescue equipment have been received in my Department and these will be considered in the context of the 2002 fire services capital programme, which I expect to announce shortly. I have provided a record level of funding of €19.568 million for the programme this year.
