Vol. 548 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Pat Carey

Ceist:

203 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has examined the provision of music in the Dublin area; his plans to make provision for music through the City of Dublin Vocational Educational Committee; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4937/02]

The curriculum to be offered to pupils attending second level schools is a matter for the authorities of the schools concerned subject to my Department's regulations concerning provision of the core curriculum and having regard to the approved teacher allocation.

Following a review of the provision for music within a number of vocational education committee schemes, including the city of Dublin VEC scheme, my Department has approved a new staffing and post of responsibility system for these music schemes. Under the new system, the number of teaching staff allocated will be determined by the number of students on the basis of an agreed ratio and the number and level of posts of responsibility will, in turn, be determined by the approved number of whole-time teacher equivalents.

City of Dublin VEC is in the process of implementing this new system.
