Vol. 548 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Michael Noonan

Ceist:

214 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Education and Science when his Department will sanction the building plans of a school (details supplied) in County Limerick; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5026/02]

The allocation for post-primary buildings in 2002 is €182.3 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates the Government's commitment to improving the accommodation situation in post-primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Since the Government came into office, there has been a great increase in the level of activity in the area of primary school building. This has resulted in a substantial increase in the number of major building projects under construction, which has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

The project referred to by the Deputy is currently under architectural planning. My Department has received a stage-three submission developed sketch scheme. The building unit of my department will contact the school managerial authority regarding this submission soon.

Liz McManus

Ceist:

215 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Education and Science when construction of the new second-level school in Kilcoole, County Wicklow will commence; the expected date of completion; the arrangements being made for enrolment of students for autumn 2002; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5027/02]

As part of the Government's programme, County Wicklow VEC is to receive a new second-level school in Kilcoole. This new school is currently at stage five in architectural planning. The Department is awaiting the granting of planning permission by Wicklow County Council. The Department will then instruct Wicklow VEC to progress to stage six – tender action and report. Under the expanded building programme, the project will progress to construction as soon as possible. The construction period will be approximately 15 months. County Wicklow VEC will make arrangements for the enrolment of pupils for the new school at the appropriate time.
