Vol. 548 No. 4

Written Answers. - Coastal Protection.

Brendan Daly

Ceist:

80 Mr. Daly asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he will provide funding for conservation, protection and development works at the bridges of Ross and Kilbaha, County Clare. [5130/02]

Primarily responsibility for coast protection works rest with the property owner, be that a local authority or a private individual. There is no funding available for the protection of private property. In October 2001 my Department wrote to all coastal local authorities inviting proposals for consideration in the context of the 2002 coast protection programme. Clare County Council has submitted a proposal for coast protection works at Ross-Kilbaha. This is under consideration in the context of the funding available for coast protection works in 2002 and overall national priorities.

My Department has no proposals from Clare County Council for coast protection works at the bridges of Ross. Careful consideration will be given to any proposal that the local authority wishes to put forward for the location.
