Vol. 550 No. 2

Written Answers. - Rail Services.

Gerry Reynolds

Ceist:

124 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the name of the company carrying out the strategic rail review in the west of Ireland. [7711/02]

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Ceist:

133 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Public Enterprise her proposals to examine the re-opening of old or unused railway lines in County Kerry as part of the strategic rail review; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7951/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 124 and 133 together.

I recently announced the commissioning of a major strategic rail study, to provide a strategic framework for future Government decisions for the development of the rail network, both passenger and freight, over the next twenty years. As part of this study, I am inviting interested parties to make submissions to me in regard to future rail development and any group wishing to do so should make their submission to my Department. The consultants who will carry out the study have yet to be appointed. At present there is an EU public procurement process under way and I expect the successful tenderer to be selected next month.
