Vol. 550 No. 2

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Alan Shatter

Ceist:

602 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Education and Science if funding will be made available to Scoil Naithí, Bothar Átha Laithin, Dublin 16; his views on whether it is reasonable that the school first drew to his Department's attention the urgent need for these matters to be dealt with in early 2001 and that, to date, the works required and the funding necessary have not been sanctioned; and when the necessary sanction will be given. [7820/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates the Government's commitment to improving accommodation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997. In view of the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since the Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity. My Department's building unit has advised the authorities Scoil Naithí, Bóthar Átha Laithin, Dublin 16, to engage a consultant architect to report on the extent of works required at the school. When this report has been received the matter will be given further consideration.
