Vol. 550 No. 2

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

664 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding the list of outstanding building projects of a school (details supplied) in County Galway; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the school is currently in unsuitable rented accommodation on a busy street in three separate buildings, is on the priority 1 list since 1996, and on 1 December 1998 received written confirmation of funding towards purchase of a site and building of a school; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that the school have an approved site but that the planning permission due to be submitted in Spring 2001 has not been submitted; the reasons for the delay in progressing these projects; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8301/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving the accommodation situation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Because of the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

A building project in respect of the school in question is currently in architectural planning as part of the Government's programme. The project will continue to the preparation of tender documents and the invitation of tenders, as soon as it is possible to do so, under the expanded building programme.
