Vol. 550 No. 2

Written Answers. - Salmon Conservation.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

80 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the meetings he had with the driftnet fishermen; if he has given them compensation; the current situation in this regard; and his proposals in this matter. [7455/02]

I have meetings on an ongoing basis with salmon fishermen, both commercial fishermen and recreational anglers.

In light of the latest available management and scientific information, meaningful reductions in salmon catches involving all sectors must be delivered starting this year. A key action to achieve this objective is the introduc tion of fishery district quotas for the taking of salmon by commercial fishing engines, including driftnets. I have clearly stated that I am committed to a sustainable commercial salmon fishery based on quality and value rather than volume. Accordingly, the introduction of quotas will not be accompanied by compensation. I have ruled out buy-out of commercial fishing licences as it is clear that this option is most attractive to those who take few salmon. However, I will continue to support, subject to available Exchequer funding, local catchment-based set-aside proposals with matching funding. In other words, the only context for incentivisation schemes will be through an agreed local scheme involving commercial fishermen and all other stakeholders who stand to benefit from increased spawning escapement.
