Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Paul Connaughton

Ceist:

268 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if an application for a sewerage scheme for Creggs, County Galway can be considered under the CLÁR programme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9308/02]

The development of public water supply and sewerage systems is the responsibility of the Department of the Envir onment and Local Government with the relevant local authority.

In order to further encourage the development of public water supply and sewerage systems in small towns and villages located within CLÁR areas, my Department, under the CLÁR initiative, will provide €1 for €1 matching funding for all schemes funded under the small water and sewerage schemes programme by the Department of the Environment and Local Government and located within the CLÁR areas.

The provision of this CLÁR funding is contingent on the scheme being selected, in the first instance, by the local authority in question and the general requirements for small schemes being adhered to. The local authority would submit a claim for CLÁR funding which would only be approved when the local authority in question confirms that tenders have been received and the contractor selected.

To date, no application has been received in respect of the Creggs sewerage scheme from Galway County Council.
