Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

533 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs if a carer's allowance payment can now be made to a person (details supplied) in County Mayo from the date of application to the date of death of the person to whom she was providing full-time care and attention. [8617/02]

The person concerned is currently in receipt of carer's allowance at the maximum weekly rate of €22.40 and a child dependant rate of €8.60. She applied for a further increase in her carer's allowance in respect of an additional care recipient.

This application was refused as the full-time care and attention condition was not satisfied. She subsequently appealed this decision and submitted further medical evidence in support of her appeal. The appeals officer, following an oral appeal hearing, upheld the original decision to refuse carer's allowance. Under social welfare legislation decisions in relation to claims must be made by deciding officers and appeals officers. These officers are statutorily appointed and I have no role in regard to making such decisions.
